A Green & Local Hotel
LEED - Gold Certified
The Lodge at the Presidio embraces the concepts of “green and local” in ways we hope will enhance every aspect of your stay. The commitment began with the rehabilitation of the historic Montgomery Street Barracks and continues with day-to-day operations at the Lodge.
Lodge at the Presidio Employs The Following Practices:
Adaptive Reuse:
- Adaptive reuse of a historic building is an effective sustainable design strategy as it minimizes the environmental impact resulting from the manufacture and transport of new building materials. It’s estimated that 30% of the energy used throughout the life of a building is contained in the building materials. By reusing the building, this embodied energy is retained, the life of the building is extended, and resources are conserved. The “greenest” building is the one that already exists.
- When designing the Lodge, extensive energy-saving systems were put in place to ensure the day-to-day demands of a busy hotel utilized the least amount of energy possible. In the guest rooms, key card control for power usage reduces guest electrical use by 20-25% annually. The use of LED lighting throughout the hotel decreases the electrical load and heat gain. The Lodge’s HVAC systems use economizer cycles and outside air to take advantage of the Presidio’s naturally cool micro-climate to reduce the energy demand for air conditioning by approximately 20%.
- Water conservation was equally important in the design process. Through high water efficiency plumbing fixtures, faucets, showers, and laundry equipment, the Lodge was able to achieve a 30% reduction in the typically high levels of water usage for a hotel.
- The Lodge was cognizant of exclusively selecting non-toxic and low-emitting materials for paints, flooring, adhesives, fabrics, carpets, and composite wood materials. Throughout the construction process, recycled and post-consumer recycled content materials were utilized. Most notably, reused blue jean scraps were used for insulation. This approach allowed the Lodge to reduce the typical waste materials inherent in the construction process by 75%.
SF Green Business Certified:
- The Lodge at the Presidio strives to be a denizen of environmentally responsible and sustainable operational practices. We use the most stringent of housekeeping and waste management practices and have also formed a Green Committee to stay on top of the developing technologies and advancements in sustainability. We provide guests with the awareness and tools so they become stewards of our green practices. Our committee trains all new employees and holds meetings for staff on green practices, providing updates and re-training as needed. As the only hotel representing the Presidio Trust, we’re committed to setting the bar for green operations, housekeeping & cleaning, utility, and waste management, and following green practices for operations throughout our tenure.
A few of the green cleaning practices we use are as follows:
- We use only environmentally friendly cleaning solutions, all from the SF Approved Green list.
- We follow a LEED & Green Housekeeping guidelines.
- We follow American Hotel & Lodging Associations 69 guidelines for operations, including the 11 minimum, and 58 additional energy, water, waste guidelines. The AH & LA guidelines are culled from every major environmental/green rating agency, including LEED.
- We source from local vendors who practice sustainable and environmental processing and distribution whenever possible. When local is not possible, we order from the AH & LA approved list of Green Vendors.
- We have rid the hotel of plastic water bottles and enabled the usage of reusable glass bottles.
