San Francisco will make a city person out of anyone. It has all the perks of a world-class city, plus world-class access to the outdoors. That’s why I have a soft spot for this city—and why I started my road trip there. Here’s what I recommend.

Located within the Presidio of San Francisco, California, the Presidio Golf Course dates to 1895, when John Lawson designed nine holes for military officers to play. Lawson noted, “God shaped this land to be a golf course. I simply followed nature.”

There’s never a dull moment in the San Francisco Bay Area. Whether you’re into dramatic beaches, tech-savvy attractions or waterfront towns, the Bay Area will amaze you in an array of ways.

The Presidio covers over 1,500 acres and includes a mix of forests, meadows, beaches, and historic buildings.

Escape the bustle of downtown and enjoy nature and recreation set among the 1,500 acres of the Presidio of San Francisco. The Lodge dates back to the 19th century, when it was the Montgomery Street Barracks.

Shielded from the noise of the big city, I stay alternately in the Inn at the Presidio and in the Lodge at the Presidio in a 1,500-acre park and I can see the famous Golden Gate Bridge from my room window. There is hardly a more exclusive and secluded place to stay in this city, even though you are in the center of all the top attractions.

The Presidio is a beautiful, sprawling national park site tucked away in the heart of San Francisco and is brimming with fascinating history. From its beginnings under Spanish rule through Mexican control and the establishment of what is present-day San Francisco, to 1846, when the Presidio became a U.S. outpost, this expansive area in the heart of San Francisco has been a renowned military establishment.

October marks 25 years since the Presidio transitioned from a US Army post to a national park located within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. One of the crowning gems of its many historic buildings is the Lodge at the Presidio. The restored 1897 red brick Colonial Revival barracks housed thousands of soldiers throughout the past hundred years, and is now a unique boutique hotel with history, provenance, and style.

The Lodge at the Presidio, set within a 1,500 acre national park, has one of the city’s best vantage points for viewing and visiting the Golden Gate Bridge.
