The transformation required tremendous generosity from the San Francisco community, Presidio Trust, Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
The San Francisco Presidio is a national park of 1,480 acres located at the southern entrance of the Golden Gate bridge. The Presidio has lived many lives as a military base for the Spanish, Mexicans and then the United States. In 1884, 9 acres within the Presidio was designated as San Francisco National Cemetery. It was the first national cemetery established on the West Coast. It is now the final resting place of over 30,000 service members. On Veterans Day 2009, the Presidio cemetery overlook was completed and now serves as a sacred location for honoring the lives of the fallen soldiers from 200 years of war.
The Presidio of San Francisco is located at the northern tip of the San Francisco peninsula. On the west, the Pacific Ocean crashes against the shore, on the north, the majestic Golden Gate Bridge crosses over the bay, and on the east, the ships sail into the San Francisco Bay. It is a rare moment in the Presidio to not be surrounded by stunning views, however, there are special locations in the park where the views are simply astounding. For our short video, we captured just four of these overlooks, but we could go on for days exploring these special locations.
One of the most famous walking trails in the bay area, Golden Gate Promenade/Bay Trail, wanders along the edge of the bay through the restored wetlands of Crissy Field. In the early evening, thousands of San Francisco residents come to the promenade to walk and enjoy the crisp air and stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The Inn At the Presidio is located close to the bottom of the Presidio’s largest watershed and is surrounded by forests of redwoods, oaks, eucalyptus, and pine. Step out of the back door of the Inn and you are on the “Ecology Trail” ready to wander through miles of park trails.
One of San Francisco’s favorite events is the Presidio Picnic which takes place every Sunday starting March and ending in October. The Presidio Picnic is more than a celebration of food and dance, it a statement of San Francisco’s encompassing diversity. The city’s food trucks line the Main Post and the flags and frisbees fly in the afternoon wind.
